3. Do they have a Customs Deferment Account?

• Reduced risk of storage and demurrage costs caused by payment delays. 

If a clearing agent does not have a deferment account, importers may need to arrange immediate payment before cargo can be released, which can disrupt your operations during busy trading periods.

4. Are they affiliated with recognised trade associations? 

Membership in industry bodies such as the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) indicates adherence to professional standards, ongoing regulatory awareness and access to industry dispute resolution processes. 

5. What do their clients say about them? 

Testimonials on websites are useful, but it is wise to also check independent reviews such as Google feedback or industry referrals. Consistent complaints about communication delays, hidden costs or operational inefficiencies should be treated as warning signs. 

6. Do they provide advice or only process transactions? 

Some clearing agents focus purely on submitting documentation, while others actively help clients manage compliance risks, tariff classifications and duty optimisation opportunities. Businesses benefit significantly from working with partners who take a proactive advisory approach.
